If you’re a teenager (male or female) it’s a good idea to start a skin care regimen in order to prevent future acne breakouts or other skin conditions. Doing so will ensure that your skin will be healthier than those who do not take care of their skin.

Let’s go over a simple teen skin care routine each and everyone of you can follow (these are the steps you should follow):

  1. Cleansing of the skin (a gentle cleanser, nothing too harsh). Cleansing your face washes away dirt.
  2. Moisturize (a light, preferably natural) moisturizer is important because it will help keep your skin hydrated and healthy.
  3. Sunscreen, sunscreen, sunscreen! You should start protecting your young skin from the sun’s rays at an early age. If you don’t want wrinkled skin as you get older, this is your time to start prevention by using a gentle sunscreen. (If you’re already at a stage of wearing makeup, you should apply your makeup after you’ve followed the above steps).

In the very near future we’ll be unveiling a website and blog specific to teen skin care, be sure to check back with us soon.

For the past three decades, Bay Harbour Med Spa has been treating teens suffering from acne and other skin care issues in Miami, Fl. During this time we’ve amassed a large amount of data pertaining to teen skin care. The number one complaint amongst teens is acne. Before we go over skin care advice, it would serve our readers best to understand a little more about acne.

So, what is acne, and who gets acne?

85% of teenagers to young adults suffer to some degree from acne. Acne can appear as blackheads or pimples and in some severe cases can cause acne scarring. Of the 85% of teens suffering from acne, approximately 50% outgrow acne in their twenties. It’s important to note that acne does not discriminate, acne plagues both young men and women. However, young men tend to suffer more from acne because they have larger levels of androgens ( hormones that control the development of the sexual organs).  Acne in males tends to subside in their twenties while their female counterparts may suffer till their mid-thirties to forties.

Acne is a result of the pores in the skin becoming clogged.  Hormones cause the oil glands to produce more oil (sebum) and if the pores are blocked, build up may occur manifesting itself as acne. The areas mostly affected by acne are the face, neck, chest, shoulders and upper back. Heredity may play a role in teens developing acne.

Tips for managing acne

  • When purchasing acne skin products, look for products that are hypoallergenic (low risk of causing acne) and low in oil and alcohol
  • Do not use harsh scrubs, instead use mild cleansers
  • Gently cleanse (wash) your chest, neck and face in the morning and before bed time
  • Under no circumstances should you squeeze your pimples, if you do, you may develop permanent acne scarring
  • Consider getting routine acne facials at least every six weeks

Skin Care Tips For Boys

"skin care treatments logo"

A lot of boys in their teens are embarrassed to discuss skin care issues, because they’d prefer to be looked at as rugged or masculine- they don’t want to be looked down at. Knowing this, Bay Harbour Med Spa has now made it possible for young men to look up this information on the internet. You can do this privately and we invite you to ask any and all questions that you may have with respect to your skin care concerns.

Thankfully with a wealth of new men’s health information, tackling your troubled skin is easier than ever.

Looking After Your Skin

The teenage years are a traumatic time for your skin. Hormonal changes, excess oil production, sweat, air and water pollution all contribute to breakouts. A lot of times these breakouts aren’t restricted to your face, but can even pop up on your shoulders, back and even your behind.

Here are some useful tips compiled by Bay Harbour Med Spa:

  •  A good all over cleanser, such as soap or body wash ( Bay Harbour Med Spa has developed a unique skin care line specific for young men and teens).
  • Face wash for your skin type: dry/sensitive, normal, oily or combination.
  • Toner to improve your skin tone and tighten pores.
  • Facial moisturizer to leave your face feeling silky smooth.
  • A rich shaving gel to help your razor glide over your skin.
  • A razor with an aloe and/or vitamin strip to discourage nasty razor burn.
  • A proper cleansing facial specific for your skin type by a trained skin care professional specializing in teen skin care. Bay Harbour Med Spa is a renowned med spa specializing in teen skin care. We recommend that if you do not live in the South Florida area, that you seek out a med spa which has garnered a fine reputation in specifically treating teens. If you find a med spa or skin care professional, do your research about this establishment before going in. If the majority of the feedback is positive- you may have found the right place. Also, do not hesitate to ask them over the phone how they perform their facials.

A proper cleansing teen facial should consist of the following:

  1. Skin analysis- this allows the skin care professional to decipher what type of skin you have and which type of facial would be best suited for you.
  2. Cleansing of the skin to remove debris.
  3. Exfoliation- usually derived from a fruit or plant extract (grainy in nature) would be used.
  4. Steam ( this facilitates the opening of the pores for proper extraction).
  5. Massage- ( this encourages circulation). Please note: some clients should not get face massages if their skin is highly broken out.
  6. Extraction ( NEVER, EVER should your skin care practitioner squeeze your skin with his/her fingers- a tool by the name of a commodone extractor should be used).
  7. Mask- at Bay Harbour Med Spa we custom blend a mask specific to your skin’s need. Masks are standard, but each case is different, so why should a standard mask be used when one that can be blended specifically for you can be used instead?
  8. Moisturizer or skin protecteting agent should be applied before your facial treatment comes to an end.

Please note, the above is the minimum criteria that you should expect to receive when getting a facial. Bay Harbour Med Spa has its own unique teen facials and we have additional steps included in our facials.

Finally, the proper order of taking care of your skin at home would be in the following order:

  1. Wash your hands. You should never touch your face with unwashed hands.
  2. Clean your skin with a cleanser. (Bay Harbour Med Spa has its own exclusive line for teens, men and women). Make sure the cleanser is one that is right for your skin type.
  3. Wipe your face with a toner using cotton swabs.
  4. Exfoliate (this should be done only several times per week, so if not exfoliating, skip this step and move on to the next step).
  5. Apply a drying lotion/cream to acne or breakout spots only- if this is applicable to you. If not, move on to the next step.
  6. Apply a moisturizer.

These steps should be done before you go to bed each night. This is done in the privacy of your own home, so, please do not be embarrassed and start practicing good skin care habits early so that you can try to avoid adult acne which many men suffer from.

Three additional steps for young men which are very helpful:

Because young men sweat more than young women, be it because of playing sports or exerting more energy, one should:

  1. Change bed linens several times per week.
  2. Shower immediately after playing sports and/or sweating.
  3. Change shirts if shirt is full of sweat.

Teen Acne…………..

Teen Acne

To a teenager, acne vulgaris is single handedly the worst problem to affect them- because, it is not something they can hide. It’s quite conspicuous and causes embarrassment on many levels.  85% of Americans between the ages of 15-25 are affected by acne.  Most patients require minimal treatments, however, in some, persistent acne can progress to significant scarring on the face, chest, shoulders and for many on the back.

Bay Harbour Med Spa offers a multitude of comprehensive and effective acne treatments for teens to combat their acne. Apart from antibiotics and topical skin creams (should be used as a last resort) acne cleansing facials or a series of Crystal Microdermabrasion TM treatments have shown to be particularly effective. Bay Harbour Med Spa has amassed data and photos pertaining to acne and the progression of effective treatments over the years.

Bay Harbour Med Spa’s Clarifying Acne Facials and Crystal Microdermabrasion TM treatments are offered to teens of all skin colors in Miami/Miami Beach, Florida.
