Sun exposure can lead to sun damaged skin which results in pre-mature aging, wrinkles, breakouts, allergies and even worse- skin cancer. Since 1986 Bay Harbour Med Spa has tried to educate our Miami clientelle about the importance of proper skin care, facials and sun protection. We believe in this topic so much, we’ve decided to write a blog about it.’
Sun protection is important year round- even in the winter time Snow reflects up to 80 percent of the sun’s rays, resulting in sunburn and damage to unprotected skin. Many of our clients engage in winter sports, they vacation in some of the most popular mountain resorts in the country. What we found is that when they return to sunny Florida, many of them experience some sort of sunburn. From our research this results because there is less atmosphere at high altitudes to block the sun’s rays.
To avoid pre-mature aging, it is important to practice sun protection habits early on- from childhood. Most of our sun damage occurs before the age of 18. This is why it’s paramount to protect children from sun exposure and teach them to apply sunscreen every single day. One of the contributors to premature aging occurs because of a lifetime of sun exposure.
It is never too late to start preventing sun damage, for those who’ve already had years of exposure to the sun, although you cannot undue what was done, you can prevent further sun damage. Here are some useful tips:
- Use a broad-spectrum sunscreen with a high SPF, go for 55 or higher.
- Include coverage of the lips, even on cloudy days and wintry days.
- If exposed to water, or sweat (as a result of running), use a water resistant sunscreen.
- Wear a broad-brimmed hat and large sunglasses.
- Sit in shade whenever possible.
- Try to avoid peak sunlight hours between 10 a.m. and 4 p.m. when planning out door activities.
