Teen Acne vs. Adult Acne

Acne is a problem for teens and adults alike. It is not exclusive to teens going through puberty. As a matter of fact, acne amongst adults is a growing trend- more than half of women with acne did not experience breakouts or blemishes during their teens.  The onset of adult acne can occur as a result of pregnancy (usually post) or even during menopause, due to an imbalance in estrogen (the female hormone) levels.

Teen acne is associated more often with extremely oily skin. Adult acneoccurs in those with combination skin type.  Skin breakouts in teens basically present themselves much in the same way in adults.

What exactly is combination skin?

Combination skin type have zones of oil and dry skin. Usually  characterized by T zone (forehead, nose and chin), this zone is usually oily, while the rest of the face is dry. Oily skin is where some type of acne typically forms.

How do I know if I may have acne?

Usually, acne is triggered by some kin d of internal factor, such as stress or hormonal imbalances. Symptoms are usually the same across the board- it manifest itself as pimples and/or blackheads on the surface of the skin. However, the severity levels vary, acne can be very minor to very severe, in severe cases, oozing from the pus and infections may occur. If this is
something you’re experiencing, you should see a dermatologist IMMEDIATELY!

Severe Teen Acne

How does acne form?

In short, acne is produced as a result of the body’s over abundance of oils and sebaceous fluids which become trapped beneath the surface due to cuticle build up or debris. When this occurs, unnatural levels of bacteria may begin to form which may result in infections.

Severe acne can cause permanent scarring that can be bothersome, to say the least, and for many , quite embarrassing. The good news, that for most levels of acne, there are treatments which do not require harsh antibiotics or acne medicine.

A facial involves a few basic steps:
· cleansing
· exfoliation, usually while a steam vapor is directed at your face.

At Bay Harbour Med Spa a facial is given by a licensed esthetician with special training in European skin care.

How Often Should I Get A Facial?

It varies from person to person. Ideally, you should get a facial every four to six weeks because that’s how long it takes the skin to regenerate. Try to have a facial at least four times a year, as the season changes. You may need it more frequently if you are trying to clear up a case of acne, especially at the beginning. Otherwise, once a month is plenty.

Men’s Skin……..What’s The Difference?

Copyright 2010. All rights reserved.

So what’s the first step in understanding men’s skin? Firstly, we must consider male hormones- androgens and testosterone. These hormones attach to receptor sites in the epidermis and dermis ( skin layers).

Testosterone action  causes some noticeable differences in male skin physiology. In the epidermis, testosterone increases the number of granular cells and in the dermis, testosterone increases the amount of collagen produced and stimulates blood flow.  So you’re probably asking what’s the connection with the skin? Well, with respect to the sebaceous glands, testosterone stimulates the production of sebum and in the hair follicle, testosterone toughens the hair. Essentialy, mens’ skin differs from women’s skin in several ways:

Men’s Skin Is Oilier:  men’s skin has higher secretion levels of sebum. Oilier skin is prone to acne and blemishes.  Acne face treatments and specific facials customized for men can help with this issue.

Men have more facial hair: Generally, men have coarser facial hair, largely in part becuase it’s toughened by testosterone. The concern for men is pseudofolliculitis ( ingrown hairs)- this is where coarse hair hardened by testosterone curls back or grows sideways under the skin. This is mainly caussed by shaving. Laser hair removal is a very helpful treatment for men’s ingrown hair issues.

Men’s skin tends to be more sensitive: men tend to experience skin sensitivity at higher rates than women. Men are more prone to redness and under eye pufiness. Environmental factors coupled with shaving result in sensitivity. Skin products customized specifically made for men’s skin can help with these issues. Bay Harbour Med Spa cusomized an organic product line called Ckronos which has yielded phenomenol results specific to men’s skin.

Men’s skin is thicker: male skin develops more collagen than that of  it’s female counterpart, resulting in a thicker epidermis. The downside of thicker skin is that this results in deeper facial lines as they prematurely age as well as more age spots. Sun protection and Crystal Microdermabrasion TM can help combat these issues.

Skin care for men needs to be specific, it needs to be delivered with purpose- expert men’s skin care comes with experience.

In A Few Words…….What Is Microdermabrasion? By Miami’s Top Microdermabrasion Med Spas

With a large portion of aging caused by environment damage, Crystal Microdermabrasion ( Bay Harbour Med Spa’s exclusive treatment) can effectively revise the skin.

Microdermabrasion is a safe treatment that is considered to have the effects similar to laser treatments or medical peels without the risk of trauma, contraindication or down-time. Ten (10) microdermabrasion treatments can achieve the same results as one (1) laser treatment; thus, microdermabrasion is a progressive treatment and does not yield the aggressive symptoms that laser does.

Some years back, a patient came to Bay Harbour Med Spa asking for help. She had gone to a doctor’s office who performed the laser treatment on her face, she went home, went to bed and woke up with the pillow case adhered to her face. We called on a cosmetic-dermatologist to meet her in the ER and recommended she should be under his care. That story is atypical, however, it’s important that you know that laser treatments of the face will leave you very red, inflamed and there is down-time, you will not be able to return to work on the same day or even the next day.

Bay Harbour Med Spa combines botanical extracts with a state-of-the-art medical grade microdermabrasion machine and has proudly created one of the most advanced skin care systems available.

Excellent results can be achieved on:

  • Thick
  • Uneven textured skin
  • Wrinkles
  • Fine lines
  • Pigmentation ( hyper)
  • Sun-damage
  • Acne
  • Acne scarring
  • Small hypertrophies

We hope that this blog helps you understand a little more about what microdermabrasion treatments are.

Bay Harbour Med Spa’s 5 Habits To Achieve Healthy Skin

Copyright. All rights reserved.

As 2010 approaches Bay Harbour Med Spa is proud to announce that our motto for the new decade is Beautiful Skin For A Lifetime; with that, we’ve decided to write articles to reach the masses about how to maintain and achieve a healthy state of skin maintenance for a lifetime. We want to do this for people all over the world ( sans the sale pitches); genuine skin care advice with the hope that we will be able to help each and every reader in one way or another. Please feel free to leave comments and questions; if we’re able to answer your questions we will. Our future blogs will cover all skin care issues and topics.

Today marks our first day, first blog and hopefully first of many informative blogs to navigate through our journey. Having written that, please take the time to read our take on the habits of healthy skin:

THE 5 HABITS OF HEALTHY SKIN:

1. PROTECTION, PROTECTION, PROTECTION:

Wear sun-wise protective clothing, using a broad-screen sun protection cream, and stay out of the sun between 10 a.m. and 3 p.m. If you’re out and about running errands, might we suggest a hat and large sunglasses to protect your face and shoulders.

2. MODERATE EXERCISE ON A DAILY BASIS:

Moderate exercise on a daily basis will ensure homeostasis of your psyche and physique. Exercise aides in controlling anxiety and stress, both of which are culprits in pre-mature aging and cause accelerated free-radical activity as well as restrict blood and oxygen flow to the cells. We suggest yoga, dancing or walking as a healthy and safe way to get your daily exercise goal realized.

3. WHERE THERE’S SMOKE……….THERE ARE WRINKLES:

Smoking robs the skin of oxygen and precious Vitamin C, doubling the rate at which one ages and ensuring that one will have visible lines around the mouth.

4. SLEEP WELL ( 6-8 hours):

Sleep is the foundation of one’s wellbeing. HGH ( human growth hormone) is released by one’s body to revitalise your body and regenerate cells.

5. EAT WELL ( Feed your skin and body):

Using the appropriate skin products for your specific skin type does the work in nourishing the surface of your skin; a well balanced nutritious dinner tackles the task from the inside out. Eating the right foods gives the skin the nutrients it needs to be healthier, brighter, smoother and even less wrinkled. We recommend incorporating the following foods into your daily diet:

  1. Anti-oxidant rich berries
  2. Broccoli
  3. Dark leafed greens
  4. Oatmeal ( not instant)
  5. Olive oil
  6. Salmon
  7. Soy products if you’re not allergic
  8. Lots and lots of water

Please check in to this blog site regularly throughout 2010. Bay Harbour Med Spa would like to wish you a healthy New Year and hope that you’ll join us on our journey to beautiful skin for a lifetime.
