For many years we’ve tried to educate our Miami clientele that skin care should be a priority for them, if they want to age gracefully. As women age, their hormone level changes. What are some causes of thin and dry skin? Well, in women of age, premenopause and menopause. The reason this happens is because the oil glands begin to slow down their production of natural emollients (which keep the skin soft). When women become of menopause age, their skin becomes a less efficient barrier against irritants, allergens and bacteria.
Thinner skin is more susceptible to a type of inflammation called dermatitis (inflammation of the skin, either due to direct contact with an irritating substance, or to an allergic reaction. Symptoms of dermatitis include redness, itching, and in some cases blistering). Because of this, it is of the utmost importance to keep the skin soft and hydrated.
What is menopause associated with? Calcium deficiency in the epidermis, which is a contributing factor to weak skin. Lets cover skin care treatments in med spas, which target women of premenopause and menopause age. For years, Bay Harbour Med Spa has used the following skin care ingredients when providing skin treatments to our Miami and Miami Beach clientele:
- Grapeseed extract
- White and Green Tea
- Organic Antioxidants (derived from vitamis, fruits and vegetables)
- Hyaluronic acid
- Retinol
- Peptides and bio-peptides
If you don’t live in the South Florida area, you should absolutely ask you med spa clinician, what types of ingredients they use for treatments that claim to treat menopause. If most of the above ingredients are not mentioned, look for another professional med spa. A safe bet is to look for an “authentic” European med spa.
What type of treatments are helpful in treating skin triggered by premonopause and/or menopause?
Microdermabrasion is enormously helpful in treating mature skin. However, proper precautions must be taken! If the handpiece is dragged on the face’s thin skin, damage or inflammation may occur. What does our Miami microdermabrasion treatment offer? For starters, it improves the skin’s clarity, and reduction in visibility of lines and wrinkles.
Here are some diet tips to address women of premenopause or menopause age:
- Wild raised (not farm raised) salmon- a prime source of omega-3 fatty acids, which help reduce inflammation, and prevent redness, wrinkles and sagging.
- Dark chocolate- yes ladies, we wrote it, DARK CHOCOLATE! This wonderful gift to women is full of antioxidants and nutrients. Be sure to select chocolates with at least 60% cocoa.
- Tomatoes- are perhaps the only food which should be consumed processed. A major source of lycopene, a potent antioxidant thought to protect against cancers. Tomatoes are one of the main staples in Mediterranean diets.
- Low fat greek yogurt- provides much needed calcium to the skin and bones.
- Sweet potatoes- are loaded with beta-carotene, which helps the skin’s smooth texture.
- Blueberries- are full of antioxidants and anti-inflammatory agents that prevent long-term cell damage.
What should menopausal women cut down on and/or avoid?
Remember, the rule of thumb is moderation! Dehydrators such as alcohol, caffeine, and saunas are to be considered.
