Facial hair plaguing women is a common problem that many women of all ages (some as young as 10 years old) face silently, because they are embarrassed to discuss it openly. As women age and their hormones fluctuate, they tend to develop some degree of facial hair. Most women suffering from facial hair complain of unwanted hair growth at the chin which is coarse and sporadic. Typically, plucking, waxing and threading can be effective temporary hair removal techniques. However, if the facial hair is not straight, it may result in ingrown hairs- a fairly common condition is dark to black skin.
Allow us to explain the benefits of laser hair removal vs. electrolysis:
Electrolysis is a permanent form of hair removal that is performed by placing a needle down along the hair follicle and delivering a micro current. Electrolysis has been in existence for more than a century. Three different types of energy can be delivered to the hair follicle: galvanic, thermolysis and a blend. The galvanic form delivers and electrochemical current. The thermolysis method produces a heat current using radio waves. The blend method uses a combination of both galvanic and thermolysis technologies.
Furthermore, the downsides of electrolysis are- pain, potential scarring, hair destruction may take up to a couple of years and requires multiple sessions.
However, we would be remiss if we did not mention that electrolysis is the ideal laser hair removal therapy for women with hairs that grow in with no pigment (i.e. white hairs) in small areas such as the chin or face, because laser hair removal cannot treat light or white hair. In this case, the patient mentioned above had dark coarse hair so we opted to discuss why laser hair removal would be beneficial for her. The advantages of laser hair removal are that large areas can be treated. The darker and coarser the hair the greater the potential for destruction of the hair follicles are. Generally, only the hair in the active growth cycle can be treated, therefore, we recommend treatments be spaced out over a year every six weeks.
Patients with a lot of pigment in their skin, such as those who are African-American, Asian, Indian or Mediterranean can only be treated by one laser technology called CoolGlide TM. Laser Hair Removal Miami., utilizes the CoolGlide TM technique which is the only laser hair reduction technology approved to safely and effectively treat men and women of all skin colors without causing any discoloration the skin’s pigment. Any other laser technology can create hyperpigmentation or darkening of the skin.
The patient featured in this article opted for the laser hair removal treatments and has seen significant improvement, though she still has a few more treatments to go for permanent hair reduction.
Please note that after undergoing electrolysis or laser hair removal Laser Hair Removal Miami., advises all of our patients to avoid sun exposure for several weeks before and after hair removal. Patients should also use a sunscreen to protect the skin, both before and after the treatment.
