A few years ago, the term “manscaping” was a taboo subject. Many men (straight and gay alike) sought out laser hair removal treatments in the Greater Miami area, but preferred not to make it public knowledge. Today, things have changed! At our Miami based med spa, there is almost an equal amount of men-to-women ratio with respect to laser hair removal treatments. The reasons men are now seeking laser treatments to get rid of unwanted hair varies; from annoying, unsightly hair, to the most prominent problem, painful ingrowns!
Laser hair removal treatments is the IDEAL method to help men deal with ingrowns due to shaving. African-American men greatly suffer from ingrowns. If you’re a man (light, dark or black skin toned) considering laser hair removal treatments, here are a few helpful facts you should consider:
- The only laser technology you should consider is the CoolGlide ™. Why? Because it delivers! It is not an IPL! IPL’s do not deliver permanent hair reduction. It also is the only laser technology approved by the FDA to safely treat all skin colors without causing any skin discoloration. Additionally, as the name implies, it’s handpiece is cool, delivering a more comfortable treatment, as the handpiece is glided across your skin during treatment, the built-in cooling mechanism immediately cools the treated area, reducing any pain or discomfort.

Teen Acne vs. Adult Acne

Acne is a problem for teens and adults alike. It is not exclusive to teens going through puberty. As a matter of fact, acne amongst adults is a growing trend- more than half of women with acne did not experience breakouts or blemishes during their teens. The onset of adult acne can occur as a result of pregnancy (usually post) or even during menopause, due to an imbalance in estrogen (the female hormone) levels.
Teen acne is associated more often with extremely oily skin. Adult acneoccurs in those with combination skin type. Skin breakouts in teens basically present themselves much in the same way in adults.
What exactly is combination skin?
Combination skin type have zones of oil and dry skin. Usually characterized by T zone (forehead, nose and chin), this zone is usually oily, while the rest of the face is dry. Oily skin is where some type of acne typically forms.
How do I know if I may have acne?
Usually, acne is triggered by some kin d of internal factor, such as stress or hormonal imbalances. Symptoms are usually the same across the board- it manifest itself as pimples and/or blackheads on the surface of the skin. However, the severity levels vary, acne can be very minor to very severe, in severe cases, oozing from the pus and infections may occur. If this is
something you’re experiencing, you should see a dermatologist IMMEDIATELY!

How does acne form?
In short, acne is produced as a result of the body’s over abundance of oils and sebaceous fluids which become trapped beneath the surface due to cuticle build up or debris. When this occurs, unnatural levels of bacteria may begin to form which may result in infections.

Severe acne can cause permanent scarring that can be bothersome, to say the least, and for many , quite embarrassing. The good news, that for most levels of acne, there are treatments which do not require harsh antibiotics or acne medicine.

Aging and Under Eye Dark Circles

The skin around your eyes is very delicate and thin- therefore, the first visible signs of aging begin around the eyes. Aging signs around the eyes include hyperpigmentation presented as dark circles, crow’s feet and bags under the eyes. It is a myth that only excessive sleepless nights (for help with sleep problems, please click HERE) or serious illness cause dark circles under the eyes. We often get questions through our Bay Harbour Med Spa website related to under eye discoloration. In response to this growing concern amongst our readers we’ve compiled some information which provides tangible solutions to the majority of our readers/clients.
If you have health food store/supermarket in your hometown, try the following to help tackle unsightly dark circles under the eyes:
Soy and rice bran really does help target dark circles and puffy eyes. According to Life Extension Foundation a clinical study with 20 subjects, thirty years of age or older, applied a topical formulation of purified soy and hydrolized rice bran peptides. They did this twice a day for eight weeks. At the study’s end- 35% of reduction in dark circles was noted, 32% reduction of puffy eyes was noted, and 42% of improved skin texture was noted. In the future, we’ll elaborate more on this comprised treatment (Bay Harbour Med Spa is currently running a study amongst clients). However for the meanwhile consider the above, plus the following:
- Blueberry extracts
- Pomegrante extracts
- Black, green, white and red tea extracts

Arbutin in Skin Lightening Treatments

So we set out to find an ingredient that was an alternative to hydroquinone, we found it and are excited about its benefits, this ingredient is called arbutin.
Arbutin is is derived from the leaves of bearberry, cranberry and mulberry shrubs. According to The Journal of Pharmacology and Experimental Therapeutics, arbutin contains properties which inhibit melanin. Melanin produces pigment which in some cases produces hyperpigmentation.
